Sachin Tendulkar has been ranked ahead of Mahatma Gandhi by a survey.

 

Finland's mobile handset maker Nokia has emerged as the most trusted brand in India ahead of homegrown Tata, while master blaster Sachin Tendulkar has been ranked ahead of Mahatma Gandhi by a survey.

The survey titled The Brand Trust Report, India Study 2011, released here today, puts Japan's Sony in the third position, ahead of Korean consumer electronics and appliances makers LG and Samsung that are ranked at number four and five, respectively.

Undertaken by Trust Research Advisory (TRA), the survey that also included personalities as brands, puts Sachin Tendulkar at 59th position overall while the Father of The Nation, Mahatma Gandhi occupies 232nd position while actor Aamir Khan is put at 242nd rank.

Surprisingly, Bollywood's legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan's name does not figure in the top 300 list.

“The results are based on the level of trust every individual has in all these brands,” TRA Chief Executive Officer N Chandramouli told reporters here.
Though Chandramouli did not divulge the project cost of the research, he said the report was priced over Rs 4,000, as it was the only way to generate revenues.
“We will have to sell at least 7,000 copies of the report to become profitable,” he said.

Bandra boy Sachin Tendulkar moves into his dream home

 

MUMBAI: After years of search for an ideal bungalow, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar finally moved into his new abode situated at the junction of Perry Cross Road and Turner Road (near Otters Club) in the Mumbai suburb of Bandra on Wednesday afternoon.

A delighted and beaming Tendulkar made the grihapravesh along with his mother and family. The Tendulkars, over the last many years, had been staying at their 10th floor residence at La Mer building, also in Bandra. But while the earlier home was a duplex of over 2,000 sq ft, the new mansion rises up to three-storey and is spread across 6,000 sq ft. It took over three years for the batting maestro to build it.

It wasn't long ago that Tendulkar, while answering a query as to why he had not chosen to stay in a house of his own, had quipped, "Show me one good place with a clean deal." The cricket god was soon granted his wish when he chose an old Dorab Villa, which he bought for Rs 39 crore and later demolished to construct the new house which hasn't been christened as yet.

When the construction began, Tendulkar had personally sent a signed note to each neighbour expressing regret for the calm of the locality being disturbed. On Wednesday, there was a banner put up welcoming him and his family to their new neighborhood.

The move to the new place was supposed to be a quiet affair but a crowd was already in place much before the maestro could drive in with his family. A gracious Tendulkar thanked all for their good wishes and distributed sweets to children on the occasion. "I am really thrilled and happy today, especially for my mother and my family members," he said, adding, "Everyone has a dream of owning a house. I, too, had this dream. I am happy that I was able to fulfill it."

He clarified that the flat allotted to him under the sports quota (also in Bandra but not the one at La Mer) had been returned to the government so that some other worthy sportsperson could get it.

Two years ago, on the eve of Sachin's completion of 20 years in international cricket, his wife Anjali had described how the new home would be in an interview to TOI. "It will be a normal house. Given the space constraints in Mumbai, we are lucky to be having not a mansion but a nice home which will have all the requirements that Sachin had wanted. If he wants to go and play cricket with Arjun, there is a garden, not a big one but there is one. There is a parking area for our cars down, room for Sachin's mother and the kids."

On the choice of the interiors, Anjali had said, "A lot of things in the house are what Sachin wanted. But we are in it together. Also, I'm the more scientific type, more practical. I'm only bothered about where are the switches going to be placed in the house, where are the TV connections are going to be, how is the kitchen and bathroom layout going to be. He's into the fancy and decorative side of it."

The dream house is absolutely classy, and does seem to have fulfilled all the desires of the Tendulkars. High-fenced with electronic surveillance, it also has two basement levels with servant quarters and parking for several cars. The topmost floor has a lap swimming pool and a gymnasium.

Sachin, who spent his childhood at Sahitya Sahawas Colony (meant for achievers in the field of arts and literature) situated in Bandra East, has all along been a Bandra boy and wanted to own a bungalow in the same suburb.

Sachin, Ganguly praise Rahul Dravid

 

Indian cricket greats, including star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, have richly praised Rahul Dravid as he prepares to play the final one-day game of his illustrious career.

Tendulkar called Dravid the "unsung hero of the Indian team" and said his value was reflected by the sheer amount of runs he has scored.

The 38-year-old Dravid, who has amassed 10,820 runs in 343 one-dayers, will play his last game on Friday in Cardiff against England. He announced his retirement before the start of the series after having been overlooked for limited-overs games for most of the past two years.
 

Former captains Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble also praised Dravid's contribution in one-dayers.

"He has had a fabulous career as a one-day player and has contributed so much to Indian cricket," Tendulkar told a national daily on Friday. "I have no doubt that he is and will continue to be a role model for all of us."

Tendulkar said Dravid's natural game was not suited for the quick scoring of one-dayers, but had worked hard to improve and excelled in his "finishing role."

"He may not give you a quick start, but he will surely make his innings count in terms of time spent at the crease. You need such players in the team, and he was the best man for the job," he added.

Tendulkar also praised Dravid for adjusting according to the team's needs and helping the team gain depth in batting by agreeing to keep wickets.

"He is the perfect team man; when he was asked to keep wickets we all knew that he will do well because he was initially a wicketkeeper. It later helped him, and came as a big help to all of us in the Indian team during the 2003 World Cup."

Ganguly said Indian cricket should be "thankful to Rahul" for being flexible.

"Rahul has a had a checkered one-day career and it took a new turn once he decided to keep wickets in 2002," Ganguly wrote in his column in Hindustan Times. "His decision was absolutely for the team as it helped reorganize the middle-order and add more depth to it."

Kumble, who was Dravid's senior while playing for Karnataka in domestic cricket, called him an "exceptional team player" who was unfazed by criticism.

"I consider it a privilege to have played alongside him through most of my career," he wrote in Hindustan Times. "His contribution as a team player and mentor can't be quantified, and that will certainly be missed going forward."

Dravid, who played his solitary Twenty20 international during the ongoing tour of England, will continue to play in test cricket.

He has scored 12,775 runs in tests, which is the second highest aggregate in history behind Tendulkar (14,965). He has slammed 35 centuries and is fourth on the list of century-makers behind Tendulkar (51), South African allrounder Jacques Kallis (40) and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (39).
